Friday night was the sold out Better than Ezra show at the Varsity Theater. I've lost count of how many times I've seen BTE, but I believe this was the first time they gave me a personal shout out from the stage. Unfortunately I have no idea what they said about it other than it apparently it involved a story about me without a shirt on!? I don't know? I had a good time, though.
Saturday was tailgating, which meant a large part of the day was a blur. But somehow I did end up with a ticket to the game. I had somewhere else I needed to go immediately following the game. I was planning on busting out early, but of course the way the game went, I don't think anyone left early. But once LSU scored that last TD, I was high fiving people on the way out and making that pilgramage back to my car at Fred's to beat the traffic, which I was successful at.
Sunday, I saw the movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The movie is about exactly what its title suggests. I've been looking forward to this movie for a long time because people have compared it to a Terrence Malick movie (Days of Heaven,The Thin Red Line, Badlands, The New World), which is about the highest compliment to me. I can see why the comparisons were made(long shots in tall grass, voiceovers, very deliberate pace), but I don't think it would be mistaken for a Malick film. This one stands on its own merits. It's long, contemplative, and can seem a bit tedious, but I think it builds towards a good ending. It's definitely not a movie for everyone, so I warn you that if you are going in expecting a wild west cowboy movie, save your money and go rent a John Wayne flick.
Monday I went to the eye doctor for the first time in YEARS. My contacts have been getting old lately, so I figured it was time for a change. They ran a bunch of tests to make sure my retinas weren't being detached, so they had to dialate my eyes. Unfortunately, I didn't realize how blurry my vision would get after that. That drive to work was pretty iffy. But I made it through the drive and through my shift, so it's all good.
I've been listening to the new Radiohead and She Wants Revenge CDs lately, and I just got the new Seether, Serj Tankian, and Coheed&Cambria CDs, so I should have reviews soon.
Voodoo Fest this weekend. I can't express how disappointed I am that I am missing PORCUPINE TREE. I've followed them for years, and this is by far the closest they've come to Baton Rouge in all that time. But the call of duty beckons. I will survive. We will be out there Saturday evening and all day Sunday, so look for us. We need to take new myspace pics!
