This past weekend was a crazy one. Voodoo Fest was raging in New Orleans with great acts like Rage Against the Machine, M.I.A., Porcupine Tree, Smashing Pumpkins, Coheed & Cambria, Mute Math, Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, Plain White T’s and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus just to name a few. Unfortunately, The Fish and I were not able to attend on Friday or Saturday because of work. I was at the radio station all day Saturday making sure everything was working on the up and up while The Fish was out on the streets, spreading the good news of 104 The X.
Saturday night, I went out to eat and I swear everyone working at the restaurant I was eating at was on drugs or drunk. My waitress, who was about 45, kept trying to put her order pad in a pocket she did not have, and then went to give water to a table that no one was sitting at. She also forgot to get my food; I guess doing her toxin of choice was more important. I eventually got out the restaurant and made it to see “30 Days of Night”. It was not a conventional vampire movie, it had good moments and some inconsistent moments but overall it was solid. 30 Days was directed by David Slade who has directed many music videos and in some parts of the movie you can see the music video influence.
On Sunday, we headed out to Voodoo Fest. We arrived midway through The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’ set. They were bringing the heat with “Facedown”, “Your Guardian Angel” and then ended it with the final song on their CD. Ronnie Winter really tried to get the crowd involved but it was hard because there are no acoustics at outdoor festivals, but it was still cool. Gym Class Heroes were next and they did a good job of playing old and new songs along with being funny and entertaining. After GCH, Fall Out Boy went on stage. They knocked out the hits plus threw in a cover of “Mr. Brightside” from the Killers then ran off stage a little earlier than I expected. The bomb of the day went to the Black Crows, who really did not play one hit, just jammed out for an hour. I guess if you were a huge Black Crows fan, you would have been impressed but I do not see why they did not at least throw out “She Talks to Angels” or something. During the Black Crows set, I ate some kind of stew that had sausage, bacon, cheese and who knows what else in it, and although it looked funky it was great. The only problem is I did not catch what it was called so I guess I will have to wait till next years Voodoo Fest to find out what I ate. Later, I caught the beginning of Common’s set but the day had gotten long and work was calling, so we piled in and headed home.
On the way home, we stopped at a gas station on Highland Road and I got into a discussion about music with the attendant. Some people thought we were arguing because I have a booming voice and was excited but we were really just having a playful conversation. So if you ever see me in a public place and I am loud it is probably just because I do not notice the level of my voice and not because I am angry.
Monday night, I tried to get out to the Mushroomhead show but they had to end early so they could drive to a show in Indianapolis, IN, so I did not even catch the last couple of notes that they played. Oh well, this weekend should be fun with Evans Blue and The Vanished at Clicks on Saturday, not to mention LSU taking on Alabama.
