I have a friend who I have an agreement with: I'll go see movies that she wants to go see as long as she goes and sees the weird movies I want to see. It seems to work itself out. I am exposed to a lot of stuff I'd normally never watch, while I feel like I'm doing my part to spread the word of some good movies.
This weekend was a prime example of this agreement. It was a chance to take a look at romantic comedies presented in very different ways. The movies we watched: 27 Dresses and Punch Drunk Love.
27 Dresses is the new Katherine Heigl romantic comedy about a girl is "always the bridemaid, never the bride." It was a cute little movie that I think delivers on what most people (and by people, I mean FEMALES) are looking for..which is to say a nice little story with a few twists and turns before getting to the big splashy ending. It's fine for what it is, and I'm glad I saw it.
Punch Drunk Love is a Paul Thomas Anderson movie. Yes, it stars Adam Sandler, and he's in almost every scene, but it's definitely a PT Anderson movie! I'd actually seen this before, but it had been awhile, and I'm fired up about THERE WILL BE BLOOD (another PT Anderson movie opening up this week), so I decided to revisit it. It's a lot weirder than what I remembered it being. It's basically the story of a neurotic, lonely toilet plunger sales guy(Sandler) who meets another lonely, strange woman (Emily Watson) and they fall for other. There are some very strange twists and turns, but at the end of the movie, you're at the basic same place as 27 Dresses. Two kids in love. I guess. haha. It's all in the presentation. If you want to freak out your date one night, watch Punch Drunk Love. I like it.
Much love to all the people that made us signs at the Krewe of Jupiter parade this past Saturday night. It was very chilly outside, but we kept warm by yelling and screaming and basically acting stupid. My voice is suffering from it. I'm looking forward to doing it again Friday night at the Krewe of Artemis parade, and then again Saturday with the Krewe of Mystique (afternoon) and the Krewe of Orion (night) parades! See ya there!
