“Dan Day”
104theX’s Night Man-
Local Legend in the Making
By: Michael Vincent Liuzza
Baton Rouge’s corporate/commercial radio vibe, which has taken more than enough blood from the soul of the State’s Capital, is slowly showing signs of defeat.
Born and raised in this town, Dan Day has become a solid figure of stability, bringing Alternative Rock to mainstream competition, as only a local boy can do.
The journey of making radio a career is as much difficult as is rewarding. It has to be done out of love for music, for a local
scene, and for a college that assisted in developing the skills needed to survive in an ever changing environment. His career goals are self explained, “To be happy and be the best I can be. Hopefully that takes me to big places, like the east or west coast.” Day’s solid foundation came from his mother, whom he explains in appreciation, while discussing his first job. “Yard work for my mom. Wow. She was a real slave driver.” he said.
Growing up in the Red Stick, Day had an early desire to be in a music world. “My favorite song growing up was Rage Against The Machine, “Bulls on Parade”, he said. Using his love for Rock as motivation to embrace what he wanted out of life, the journey took him to LSU. Day explains, “It was a great fit for me. It allowed me to learn a lot of different things and get a lot of
experience, but LSU never takes itself too seriously. So, as you know, I got to party all the time.”
Using his self paid, well earned education, Day was hired by Guaranty Broadcasting Company of Baton Rouge, which owns the 104 the X stations, (104.5fm & 104.9fm). “I started back in 2004, but for the first year and a half I did crap-work like hang banners at events and help produce LSU baseball and basketball games. Then, when I got a chance to jump on the air, it was the high profile midnight to 5a.m. shift”, he said. “But I made the most of it. Now I’m on while most people are awake and relatively sober.”
Day has been able to hang with national and inter-national acts, rocks the X every night of the week from 7p.m.-Midnight, and is a close friend and co-worker to the one and only “Fish”. Understanding the opportunity during our interview, I asked him what Fish’s darkest secret is. Day’s response, “He keeps his wallet in his front pocket because he is scared it will be stolen if he keeps it in the back. I don’t know why he is that worried. We don’t make that much.” Day’s current favorite song? “Rash of Robberies” by, State Radio.
In appreciation for the fight to keep rock alive in the Capital City, Dan Day has kept LSU in his heart. “I guess you could say
what is unique about LSU and my experience there was that LSU knows when to have fun and when to work. That has taken me far in my career.” he said. “You can’t be me, nor do you want to. To be a success, you just be yourself and believe in what you do. Have passion, and it will take you wherever you can imagine.” Says Day.
“My first day at the radio station, one of my bosses told me that I would never really amount to anything and that I should search out another career.”-Dan Day
